| geoffc11's Full Review: EchoStar 2700 Digital Satellite System |
After 15 years of having cable TV, I finally had to compare it to satellite to see what is better for our needs. I considered cost ,of course, ease of use, specials, and long term benefits.
I moved to a state where basic cable with only HBO as a premium channel was $60 per month. I started with cable to way options. Immediately, there was a free satellite dish special. I jumped on it. However, I wanted two different receivers. Dish network informed me that I would pay an additional $99 but I had paid for installation when I purchased the system with my credit card anticipating rebate. Another additional cost was paying installer another $59 for additional receiver. On the plus side, most specials include installation kits so you can install yourself. I do not have the ability for that, therefore $59.
I did receive initial purchase cost in the form of rebate 2 weeks later. Remember, to get rebate I had to commit to monthly package of $56.98 for one year. That package included 13 premium channels and many other features that outdistanced cable including CD quality music channels.I never missed a fight on HBO or Showtime. We are also able to view some our families hometown channels in California.
The best long term benefit is the fact that if you move, you can leave your satellite and add some value to your home while receiving a new satellite from Dish at a discount rate.
My TV viewing has been outstanding. Although, a good package price on cable can outweigh the benefits of satellite, especially if you're in apartments or renting short term.
I did have 3 defective receivers before I had one that worked well. All of the defective ones were under warranty and we received a replacement immediately. If you can handle all of the TV, go Dish. If not , go cable. You will find that cost is similar or even more cost effective with satellite.
