Living in Tempe, Arizona, I was paying $60.00/month for my cable bill. If I didn't have cable, I wouldn't get my reception in clear enough to watch anything, so, being the avid T.V. watcher that I am, I had no choice.
After about 6 months of paying this ridiculously high priced service, my fiance and I began looking into satellite dishes. I decided to switch right away when I found out that the basic package for the Dish came with 40 channels and only cost $19.99/month. The funny thing was, it came with just about all of the channels that cable did.
We purchased the 40 channel package, but did look into another package that we might choose in the future. It costs $45.00/month and not only do you receive 100 channels plus 15 movie channels, you get a complete refund on the dish itself, which usually runs about $200.00.
The one downside is that you don't get any of the normal broadcast channels such as ABC, CBS, Fox, etc (at least not in the basic package. I don't remember about the other package). You have to buy those in a separate package (which, in my opinion says that they are trying to take advantage of you slightly). It did not affect me very much however, so I didn't mind. I did have to purchase a package that had the WB network on it (which costs about $5.00), so I would be able to watch my favorite show weekly, but other than that, we were ok with the channels it came with.
All in all, I'd have to say I'm very happy with the service. The dish cost a little bit of money itself (cheaper if you install yourself), but in the end, if you are already paying for a cable bill, you will end up saving money. (Depending, of course, on the packages that you choose).
