Gadget Geeks are Gonna Wanna Get a Gigaset 2420

Feb 03 '00

The box said that it was "the complete cordless communications System and the box is right on. It's expensive, but wow what a phone! I can take calls, go out check the mail at the end of the drive, and never miss a word. The Gigaset 2420 is expensive at around $400.00, but as the salesman says, look at what you're getting.

The Base
This is a lot like any standard two line business phone. It's chock full 'o features. Caller ID/Call waiting ID display, Intercom, Call Log, Call Transfer, Conference Call, Speed dial, Mute/Flash/Hold/Page, Directory, and Room Monitor(got a new baby at home?), well you get the idea. It's "fully loaded".

The Answering Machine
Integrated into the base is a digital answering machine with separate greetings for each of the two lines. All the features that you would expect with any digital answering machine are included, time/date stamping, message length, and so on. Easy to use menu, very user friendly.

The Cordless Handset
First of all, how many handsets do you need? The package comes with one, but the system is easily expandable to support eight cordless handsets. You can place charger units in other rooms, all you need is a place to plug them in. Put the cordless handset and charger where you use them most, the kitchen, the baby's room(doubles as a room monitor), where ever there is a plug. The AA rechargeable Ni-Cd batteries provide at least four hours of talk time and claim thirty six hours of standby time. The charging cradles also charge spare batteries simultaneously. The handsets have a back lit LCD display for caller ID. Each phone holds it's own personal directory, so you aren't cluttered up with other family member's directory. There is call transfer, customizable ring, a built in headset jack, and even a belt clip. It weighs only 6.04 ounces.

This is all tied together beautifully with a sleek design. One flaw is that the hold button on the cordless hand set is a little too user friendly. It is placed just about where I rest my thumb when I hold it, so I have accidentally put some people on hold and at first this was annoying. I have since retrained my thumb.

The Manual
The manual weighs in at around 126 pages, and probably wasn't cheap to produce. I appreciate good manuals though, and I think that this is a good one. I hate those little fold-up rigs that start you off in English and wind up in German or Spanish or little squiggly lines or something. The truth is, I don't even like manuals, if I want a foreign language lesson, I'll go to college and take a course. I like to open the box and get going. This manual is really great though. It is indexed well, and easy to navigate. You don't need the manual to get started using the phone, it's ready to go right out of the box, but it is useful for those extras.

The Gigaset 2420 is not for everyone at around $400.00 plus $100.00 for each additional handset. It is one great phone though, and gadget geeks like me, who have understanding wives (did I mention the baby monitor feature), are going to have to have this versatile, reliable telephone.
