Car Stereo Installation of OLD Honda Accords ('84)

Nov 10 '00

I bought the car with an awful stereo. Left amplifier blown out, tape wouldn't work. I went to Best Buy and bought a stereo that was supposed to come with free installation, but it would take *2 weeks*. I said forget it, and had my own adventure installing it. For people installing on OLD cars, it's a bit of a hassle finding certain parts.

To get your factory-installed stereo out on the '84 Honda Accord (and some other years, up to '86 and below some more years, I think), you need to pull out the ashtray under the stereo, and you will find some screws to pull out the ashtray holder. Then if you look under there to the back, there will be a large bolt holding a metal panel. Unscrew this, and the stereo will be ready to slide out.

You need a wiring harness to attach to the new stereo. Since my car is so old, I could not actually purchase a new harness from the selection they have at the stores (I'd probably have to special order it, and there's two weeks anyway). So I took my old stereo, grabbed a knife, and cut the harness off.

Then you have to connect the wires from the old harness to the stereo. The manual of the new stereo comes with a list of what each wire is for (power, left-front speaker, etc). You have to take a battery and hold it to each wire and if the speaker buzzes, you found it. My car is a little strange though, and 1 wire is the negative end for both the front and back right speaker (and front/back left speaker), so you have to really test them. You also need a light tester to check for the power supply (both the continuous and the ON power). Be sure to label each wire by tieing a piece of tape around it and making it.

Then attach the wires to where they match on the diagram given by the new stereo. Connect the plugs together, and fit it in. You should be set. When I installed mine, I blew a fuse, so make sure if you hear a loud pop, to check the fuse box on the driver's side kick panel.

Good luck!
