| e-diva's Full Review: Sony CDX-828 Car CD Changer |
I have a rule of thumb that I adhere to as strictly as my wallet will let me; audio and monitor/television equipment should always be made by Sony. Over time I've found that Sony is the one brand name that I really feel I can trust. So, when it came time to put an trunk CD changer into my Miata, I stepped up and chose the Sony CDX-828 as the changer without hesitation, trying desperately to ignore the pain it caused to my wallet.
The sound quality of this CD changer is excellent. It never once had any problems reading my CDs. The programmable nature of this changer means that in conjunction with a compatible stereo head unit, you can tell what's playing and what you have in your changer at a moment's notice.
There is a noticeable delay switching between CDs with this changer, as there has been with any CD changer I've ever used. This makes playing on a completely randomized setting annoying. However, I believe (and this is purely speculation on my part based on my experience with this changer vs. factory CD changers that come from Volkwagen) that the Sony changer has less of a delay during CD changes than other models out there.
The CD cartridge is easy to maneuver and comes in and out of the changer with just a flip back of the cover and the press of a button. It's about as idiot proof as you can get. Each CD slider is delicate however, so avoid subjecting the CD holding cartridge to much stress. Loading the cartridge consists of just gripping the tab, pulling out the tray and switching out the CD.
Finally, the Sony changer performs wonderfully in the trunk of my vehicle. I had it mounted into a small depression in the trunk (a Miata trunk is not forgiving for space). It allows for mounting at variable angles which is a dream for stereo installers and owners alike. I can't recall an instance of the changer ever skipping due to a rough drive.
