Q-logic boxes are for us lazy people! When I was younger and a car audio "enthusiast", I didn't mind doing all the math or the work involved in building a speaker box. Now I just want good sound with as little effort as possible. The Q-Logic boxes won't win you any custom installation awards, but you will be listening to your music in mere minutes rather than working all day!
Why?
Subwoofer manufacturers design their speakers to work in enclosures of a certain size. As long as the speaker is in a box that is within the design specifications, you should get satisfactory results. If the box is too small, too big, not ported correctly, (for vented boxes) or not sealed correctly, the sound and performance of the speaker will be affected.
Q-Logic has taken the guess work out of speaker boxes. You only need to decide on a speaker, find what size enclosure it is optimized for, and buy the correct size. For example: My Inifinity 10" subwoofer requires a sealed box that is ~.60 cubic feet. The Q-Logic QLH-.6510S is exactly .65 cubic feet so it is matched perfectly to my speaker.
Q-Logic manufactures their boxes out of 3/4" MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard ) which is stronger than particle board. Each joint is mitered for a strong fit and tight seal. The boxes come carpeted in dark gray, they include a custom speaker grill, polyfill (for inside the box), speaker wires, and screws. They are made in the USA and they come with a 2 year warranty.
Observations
My Q-Logic box is well built! When I pulled it out of the box, I was impressed with the solid construction. There are no rough edges on the box, the carpet is tight, and the speaker hole is perfectly round. The binding post on the back that are used to connect the speaker to an amplifier are high quality and they hold the speaker wire securely. The "integrated" grill is the only sub-standard part of the box... it is made of thin plastic and does not stay in place well, as a matter of fact, it won't stay in place at all. A bit of glue or tape should remedy that problem with little or no cosmetic impact.
Summary
The Q-Logic QLH-.6510S can be had online for as little as $50, maybe less on ebay. Lets see, is it worth $50 to have free time on Saturday rather than building a box... to me it is! The only sacrifice you make with a Q-Logic is that you don't get that custom look, but its worth it if you hate trying to find internal volume!
