I admit it. I bought this CD mp3 player because of how incredibly inexpensive it is! It's about the same price ($89) as a regular CD player except you get over 160 songs on one CD as opposed to just 17! So how come this mp3 player is selling for so cheap? It works fine, right? Those were just a few of the questions that was on my mind when I placed the order.
Initial Frustration
The MpTrip has one of the worst written instruction manual ever. I'm not exaggerating folks. This thing is very hard to figure out. In some parts of the manual I was thinking they had a computer randomly spit out English words. Obviously, this thing was written by someone who wasn't qualified to do so. To make it worse, this mp3 player is hard to use! It isn't just the standard push "play" and everything starts to run fine. I pushed "play" and everything seemed fine. Then I noticed the mp3 player would only play 60 of the 160 songs I had on the CD. I burned another CD full of songs and again it didn't work. This is when I became very frustrated. To make a long story short, I emailed my vendor and they sent me links to a few online revised manual sites. These sites were a lot of help and I soon learned all the features on this mp3 player. Many of the functions are hard to use consisting of many combinations of button pushes.
CD Mp3 Players vs. Memory Card Mp3 Players
Some mp3 players use memory cards such as Compactflash cards to hold the songs. These mp3 players, for some reason, are the ones being mass marketed today. They hold an advantage over the CD mp3 player in that they can be very compact. These mp3 players can be easily pocketed, however, their one disadvantage, is a huge one. Memory cards, such as the Compactflash cards, do not hold nearly as many songs as a CD can. They are also very expensive per MB of storage versus a CD. One CD holding 650 MB of songs costs just one dollar. One CompactFlash card holding 64 MB of songs will cost about $100!
Final Verdict - Post "Initial Frustrations"
Once you can get your hands onto a manual that makes sense this mp3 CD player doesn't seem half-bad. Despite not having all the fancy features like some of the other mp3 players out there these days, it does its job, playing mp3's, quite well. Sound quality is good. I liked that it uses regular AA batteries instead of Lithium Ion batteries like the Napa Mp3 player. Regular AA batteries are inexpensive and easy to find. You may notice that "inexpensive" appears frequently in this review. This is because the MpTrip's main advantage over other mp3 players is just how inexpensive it is. The MpTrip is the economic solution to owning the newest technology, an mp3 player!
