Sony mini disk

Dec 20 '00

I bought Sony "mini stereo" from a catalog about 2 years ago.

First of all. I bought it and kept it boxed, because we were doing some painting, remodeling, etc. at the time. It wasn't until several months later that I got it out and set it up.

I have to admit that I was a little suspect when I opened the box and found a "stabilizer" that seemed to be included as an afterthought. A "sticker" was placed on the CD lid instructing the user to place it on top of the CD every time one was to be played. From the beginning, the stabilizer did not "stabilize". Some CD's played, others "waffled" creating a very unnerving sound along with skips in the music! This malfunction happened with too many CD's to let it pass.

I first contacted the catalog--Frontgate--but they wouldn't do anything because I had missed their deadline for returns! The woman didn't care that I had not even taken the stereo out of the box for over six months.

So, I turned to Sony's website. I emailed them twice with my complaint and received rapid responses both times, but they did not accept any responsibility and did not offer any form of customer satisfaction.

I explained to them the problem, and suggested it to be a design flaw. They emailed back to tell me they had no other complaints about that particular model. I thought this was curious, because in a later Frontgate catalog there appears the same stereo with an obviously "built-in" stabilizer which looks as if it would correct the problem I have been experiencing. If there were no design problem, why did they immediately redesign the stabilising mechanism? Furthermore, I took the stereo into a local electronics repair shop--at my expense--to see if they could order a new lid with the built-in stabilizer to install on my original stereo, but Sony would not release any parts to him; he is not an "authorized" Sony repair person!

My warning to Sony that I plan to never buy another Sony product again did not even make them flinch. Why sould they care about a single consumer? They could certainly remain profitable without my single purchases.
