| nicknack's Full Review: Aiwa NSX-AJ24 Digital Mini System |
After 11 years, my husband and I finally gave in and tossed our "first stereo" out the door and went searching for a replacement. Because space is limited in the room the stereo would go in, we didn't want to purchase a complete entertainment music system, yet we didn't want to settle for a portable boom box either. Money was also an issue, so we figured our options would be limited.
We looked in several of the local department stores and decided Wal-Mart was going to produce the best deal for our money. After much consideration, we chose the Aiwa NX@-AJ24 compact disc stereo system for $149.
This system features a 3 CD changer which was plenty for us. One of the features that I especially liked about the system is the CD player. You have the option of changing 2 of the CDs while the third CD is still playing. This comes in handy for us, because as a household we have a wide range of musical tastes. I can switch the second CD while the CD my husband chose earlier is still playing, making a smooth transition from his tastes to mine.
The system has a dual cassette feature which allows you to record from cassette to cassette, from CD to cassette, from radio to cassette or from microphone to cassette. When we were looking for a new system, we definitely wanted it to have a CD changer, however, the cassette system was important as well. I have a lot of accompaniment tapes so I need a good cassette player to use them. I am a little disappointed in the cassette system. My old system would allow me to play one tape while I was rewinding the other tape, or even allow me to play both tapes at the same time. This system doesn't allow that. Only one of the tape decks will function at a time, unless you are dubbing from one tape to the other. While this might seem like a minor detail, it's pretty important to me considering what I use the cassette decks for. In addition, there are times that I can put the cassette tape into the deck and the system will not acknowledge it's presence so it won't play the tape. If I push on the window of the tape deck it will confirm the tape, but as soon as I let go of the window it again tells me there is no tape in the deck. Eventually I can fiddle with it long enough that I can get the tape to play, but it is very annoying.
The system has a timer on it that you can set to go off at anytime day or night. It can be programmed to play the CD or the radio when it goes off. One feature about the timer that I really like is that no matter how loud or soft you were playing the stereo previously, the volume resets itself to a medium level for the timer.
Almost all the features can be controlled from the remote, making it very useful for practicing an accompaniment tape. I can stop and rewind without running over to the stereo and punching buttons. A quick flip of the remote and I'm right back to doing what I was doing.
The small size is a convenience for us, because it fit right into our TV entertainment center which is smaller than most. It comes with 4 speakers, although we are currently only utilizing 2 of them. It has a digital screen that will tell you volume, tape deck, CD or radio channel. It will tell you which number selection is playing on the CD as well.
You can set the CD player to random and it will rotate not only between the songs on one CD, but also between the 3 CDs giving you a wide variety of music.
Overall, it's a very good system. My only complaints are the few things I mentioned on the cassette system and I'm learning to live with them.
