I bought this Hughes Direct TV Satellite receiver and dish because the price for the entire system was less than the repair estimate for my RCA system which had the phone modem zapped during a lightning storm. An unexpected benefit from this decision is the fact that I then had an extra dish that I could install in our Florida home and I only have to carry the receiver back and forth between Florida and Illinois. Hughes also manufactured the Direct TV satellite.

My experience has been surprisingly good. After a few stumbles through the vague owners manual we found the reception and features to be at least equal if not superior to our previous system. The "picture-in-picture" program guide allows you to scan other offerings while continuing to view your current program. "Turbo Tune" allows you to quickly access nine of your favorite pre-programmed channels. Another feature lets you program an entire evening's viewing in advance. The channels change automatically as your selections come due.

This is the basic Hughes model. The receiver's computer chip and the remote control show on screen features, such as automatic video taping, that are not available on this model. This was frustrating because the owners manual or on screen warnings don't tell you this. Many hours were spent trying to access these features.
