Sprint PCS has great prices, and the quality of the connection is generally great, as long as you can connect at all. Unlike most (all?) non-digital services, it includes free voice mail for when you're not in range (as well as Caller ID).
I use the tiny Sony Z phone, which I got on a special for $100 or so, and it's great.
But, even within New York City the service is somewhat spotty. For example, in my normal travelling around the city I've notice it gets a very weak signal, or none at all, on East 37th St., around the Fulton/Livingston/Boerum Pl. area of downtown Brooklyn, and inside many buildings.
However, I don't know that other services have better coverage, and the voice mail and prices make this the service I use and recommend.
