Digital Mini Camcorder
Dec 20 '99
Being used to using my daughters camcorder, which is an 8mm format, I recently had the opportunity to borrow a JVC Mini Digital camcorder to use at a concert at my son's college. I had no difficulty in using the camera as it has a fully automatic mode, where everything is automatic as well as a PRO mode, where you can manually make adjustments. The Mini Digital tape, which is quite small has a recording time of 60 minutes in the Standard Play mode and 90 minutes in the Extended Play mode. The battery that I had on the camera was only a 1 hour battery, provided I did not use the color LCD and only used the BW viewfinder, so I chose the Standard Play mode and opted for the BW viewfinder to maximize battery time. The camera also has a snapshot mode, which I feel is cumbersome to mix still with video. The use of dubbing cables made is easy to copy the Mini Digital tape to a standard VHS and basically make a VHS master of excellent quality. The video and audio quality is very good, however, the other limitations such as recording length and time, difficulty in finding stores locally the stocked the Mini Digital Tapes (all stores I visited had plenty of the 8mm tapes), lack of title ability made me decide that when I do purchase a Digital Camcorder I will most likely go with the 8MM Digital Format. Digital is the only way to go for the best audio/video quality. From a price standpoint the JVC at $999, which is what my friend paid, is on the high side when compared to 8mm digital cameras that come with a lot more features.
