| soothsayer's Full Review: Sony KV-13FM14 13 inch TV |
The Sony Wega is a beautiful TV to watch. It was engineered to provide a great picture thanks to the Trinitron picture tube, and designed to look good with a clean, modern looking chassis.
There are two speakers built in to the TV both angled from the side. The Wega is stereo capable, and features stereo audio and video RCA input jacks for your VCR and DVD players. There is also a earphone jack for private listening. All the input/output jacks are hidden behind a spring-loaded trapdoor at the right hand side of the chassis.
The screen is flat, and when viewed from all angles, you are still able to see what is on the screen. The Sony Wega was specifically designed that way. In addition, the depth of the tube has been reduced making it
compact and lighter. The picture quality is superb due to the Trinitron tube and 3 comb filter to further clarify the picture. Clearly, the quality shows.
This stereo capable TV has 5 channel "favorites" preset, speed surfing, clock and snooze timer. This is in addition to the industry standard - in most TVs today - 181 channel capabilities, V-chip parental control, closed captioning, and channel labelling options. The Wega's onscreen menus are comprehensive, and in addition to the default english language interface, one can choose either spanish or french to navigate.
13 inch TVs usually are small, but the screen on the Sony Wega appears larger, even though it is an even 13 inches diagonal. Also deceptive (in a good way) is the flat screen quality of the TV. The Wega is not a flat panel, but sure feels like one though.
The only clear design flaw I found was the spring-loaded chassis door hiding the input/out jacks. The door was flimsy, and easily breakable if one is not too careful. The door absolutely had no durability to it. Aside from this minor detail, the Wega is a great TV.
The sticker shock: Sony usually are more expensive, and depending on the type of electronic you are buying, sometimes of better quality than the competition. The Sony Wega is rather expensive, currently at $279.00 (circuit city), about USD 150+ more than regular 13" TVs. For those who can afford it, and want something good, and care a lot about picture quality, then the Wega comes highly recommended. For someone who likes TV, but not enough to justify paying $279+ for a 13 inch, then a regular TV is the better buy.
