The Advantages, and Disadvantages.

If you are up to date with what is going on in the internet world, you must have heard about MP3s recently. MP3s are music files that are compressed so they can be easily downloaded off the internet and then played on your computer, and more recently, MP3 players.

The quality of MP3s are almost as good as the regular CD. In fact, most people can not tell the difference when they listen to an MP3 and when they listen to the actual CD. The newest devices on the market in regards to MP3s are MP3 players. These players allow the user to download anywhere from six to twenty songs onto the MP3 player and then its used similar to a discman. There are some advantages and disadvantages of using a MP3 player.

Advantages:

There are some major advantages to buying an MP3 player. The first and most obvious is the selection of music which is available on the internet. If you have a large collection of MP3s on your computer, or are just starting to download these songs off the net, you need a way to carry the songs around when you are not sitting on your computer. MP3 players give us this freedom. Using an MP3 player allows the person to download their favorite songs onto the player and then bring it to the gym or beach.

All MP3 players have no moving parts which means there is no way that the player will ever skip. Compared to a discman or even a walkman, an MP3 player will not skip even when you are running on the treadmill or accidently hit it with your hand. This is a nice feature of MP3 players compared to discmans.

Another advantage to owning a MP3 player is the size of them. Each MP3 player does vary in size from Sony's that is about the size of a large pen, to Creative Labs Nomad which is about the size of a tape cover. Either way, any MP3 player you buy will be smaller than a discman or walkman and they will also be a lot lighter. The battery is the only thing that makes the MP3 players somewhat heavy. Without the battery, you might drop a MP3 player and not even notice.

Disadvantages

There are some disadvantages with owning a MP3 player. The first and most obvious is cost. MP3 players are not cheap. The lowest price I have seen is about $150. This is for a MP3 player will a small memory (32 MB) which means you can hold less songs on it. To upgrade most MP3 players it will cost you an additional $100 per 32 MB. This is expensive compared to the average discman which costs less then $100.

Another disadvantage is the memory that the MP3 players come with. Most of the players that are on the market today have 64 MB of memory which will allow you to put about fourteen songs on it. The problem is, you are stuck with those fourteen songs until you change them. If you go to the beach, you are obviously not going to change them while you are at the beach. That means you must listen to the same fourteen songs throughout the entire day. If you have a discman, you can continiously change the CD throughout the day.

Conclusion

The bottom line in choosing an MP3 player is preference. If you need a player that won't skip and you have a lot of MP3s so you need to carry the songs somehow, then I would recommend buying a MP3 player. If you don't have a lot of songs and don't mind using a discman, save the money and don't buy a MP3 player.
