| alexaugot's Full Review: Sennheiser RS 8 Wireless RF Headphones |
Sennheiser headphones are high quality, world class headphones. They always have been, and hopefully, they always will be. The RS-8's are no exception. They provide crisp, clear sound with very little distortion. It's just the range that sucks.
The RS-8's package includes a neat pair of oversized, comfortable on-ear headphones. It also comes with a transmission unit, which is pretty tiny. Small enough to place on any CD unit or shelf system. The transmission unit does rely on battery power, so forget about using it on a portable CD player or boombox. The box says it can transmit to about 300 feet away, but in reality its more like 75 to 100 without MASSIVE distortion.
Because the RS-8 transfers its audio signal at anywhere from 900mhz to 2.4ghz it is prone to interference from other wireless devices like cellphones and cordless phones. The farther you get away from the transmitter, expect to see a significant loss in quality. The transmitter also acts as a re-charging station for headphone batteries. If you buy the RS-8's, I suggest getting 1 or 2 extra batteries. They play for about 3 hours ( at medium volume ) but take nine hours to recharge. The transmitter has 2 slots for batteries, and the batteries fit in a neat little slot in the headphones.
The headphones are very nice as well. They fit snugly, and can be adjusted to fit about any head size. They aren't they coolest looking things when you are wearing em, but you learn to deal with it. The headphones provide nice pumping bass, and great loudness. Just good all around headphones, that happen to be wireless. These headphones have another plus too : they pick up cordless phone conversations. Personally, I'm not in to the whole ease dropping scene, but if you're into that just turn the dial all the way down to the 900mhz range and you can pick them up. The headphones also have a small signal wheel on the left ear to adjust the tuning lv for the transmitter.
I consider myself an audiophile, and little things get to me. Unfortunately, there are a lot of little tings that get to me with the RS-8's. For one thing, they go in and out of tune too often, distracting me from what ever I'm listening to. Often the subtitles of the music you are listing to are either distorted, or non existent. That's fine if you are listening to hard rock or punk, but sorta sucks if you are listening to acoustic guitar. The treble also isn't as clear and loud as I would have liked.
Don't get me wrong, these are great wireless headphones, and well worth the money, but its the little things that keep it from getting 5 stars. It's probably just me though. Most people who I let use it can't tell the difference between regular headphones and the RS-8's.
The bottom line is, if you are using these for around the house, they rock, but don't go too far outside or all you'll get is static.
