Eclipse 5342R

Big name, just good performance.
My experience with this deck for the past 6 months has been relatively positive. It plays CD-Rs fine and has Eclipse's well known protection feature called, ESN, or Eclipse Security Network. It works by storing a CD you programmed to be your "key CD". If power is removed from the deck, it will ask you for the "key CD" on start up. If after 5 tries, you don't put the right CD in, you have to send the deck back to Eclipse--this could be a potential nightmare for the thief or for a forgetful owner!! This deck also comes with credit card type remote, which is very handy if you want to control the deck from the back seat or tailgate if you have a truck/SUV, but I warn you! it doesn't work from a distance much further than 8-10ft!
Sound is excellent. All options are selected with Eclipse's "N.O.B", which is pronouced knob, but I guess they wanted to be different. It stands for something, but I forget...anyway, it features standard treble and bass, but also has a completely separate subwoofer setting and an option to make one of the three RCA's into input--for an EQ.
There are some minor quirks with this deck though, for example, I don't like the fact that it displays "CDP" for CD mode, rather than just "CD"--Ok, a little picky but I guess it grows on you after you see it everyday. Also, the CD-player occasionally skips when I hit a large bump--given that I am driving a 4runner, the suspension is a little stiffer than most cars, so it may be less prone to skipping in cars.
Overall, it's a good, solid deck. However, the few small problems make it fall just short of being great. A aesthetically pleasing design, small remote, excellent sound production only get held back by the skipping and "CDP" display...If the "CDP" doesn't bother you than this deck could very well be a great one!
Hope you find the perfect deck!
