| fogrove's Full Review: Boston Acoustics Powered Subwoofer VR2000 |
Having previously owned two powered subwoofer, I had gone without one for a year and a half. Anyone who has ever owned a powered sub will tell you, once you have owned one it spoils you rotten. If have to go without one as I did, I almost wish I ever knew sound reproduction with a powered sub. My first powered sub was a AudioSource SW4(1994), it had pretty good response down to 40hz, but that's about it, I blew the driver after four months. I was not getting the structure rattling, light filament dancing, wow your friends deep bass. Don't forget a true subwoofer's duty is reproduce frequencies of 30hz down to the mid teens. So my next subwoofer purchase after careful, obsessive thought was the Velodyne FSR-15. This baby on the first day I put it through the rigors of music and movie performance, blew me away with the clean, commanding, low bass. Everything and more I had expected from a Velodyne. But due being in college and moving around and other circumstances I had to sell it.
So after a year and a half went by without a power subwoofer I cracked and my wife allowed me to get another one. For starters I knew a 12incher would be large enough to give me room filling bass, as well as extended low response. But which one. Having home audio for a hobby for 12 years and knowing a lot about different speaker companies and have had heard a lot of subwoofers this was not easy choice. I had in mind a THX Certified Powered Subwoofer for two reasons. The first being someday I would like to own a home theater system which consists of THX certified components. Second reason being the requirements of a THX subwoofer in terms of performance in frequency response(flat down to 20hz!) and able to fill a 3000ft3 with deep bass. Not many subs have these credentials. Now that's what I'm talking about. Boston Acoustics has always had great small powered subwoofers(8"and 10") that more times than none for the money and size, performed better than other subs in their class. When I went to the dealer and asked to hear the VR2000 I was completely blown away by the outright strength and solid dynamics. The VR2000's ulitarian brute looks was also a key point for me, I do not like weird grills or fancy finishes. One look and this huge black box says bass. Hooking it up was a snap, and I have done it both ways, first speaker level, then when I got my Digital Dolby Receiver line level inputs via the AC-3 input. There is nothing unusual about the rear of the sub. It gives the user plenty of options for wiring. It has a dedicated AC-3/THX input, speaker level five way binding posts, and line level input and output. It also comes with a polarity switch, also called a phase switch so you can match your sub to your satellites for a more tweeked sound. I'll tell you this, the VR2000 has proved to me(which is very hard to do) to be an overall reliable sub in both music and movie reproduction, every bit as much as my old Velodyne. I have had it playing in a small, medium and large rooms with great results in all. This THX bad boy will not disappoint. FEEL THE POWER! Please send comments about the VR2000's performance for any other questions that might come to mind.
If you do purchase this sub, do me and yourself a favor and use either heavy gage Monster Cable(speaker) or a dedicated subwoofer cable(RCA) to make the connections. After all why buy a Corvette but use Goodyear wingfoots on it. Cable is your system's arteries man!!!!!
