TiVo makes TV better
Sep 18 '99
I bought this product because I love TV but hate being tied to network showtimes. I also hate VCRs (they are too difficult to program and keep programmed) and love bleeding edge technology. Now that I have the TiVo box, I wonder why it took so long for them to be created. The automatically downloaded TV schedule (with full episode descriptions) makes it really easy to find TV shows to watch and/or record. It's also simple to play and delete shows that you've recorded. And the playback quality is much superior to my VCR (including rewind and fast forward).
I REALLY love how it records a show as I'm watching it. It's great for instant replays and for times when you don't get back in time to the TV after commercials. If you get behind, it's easy to jump forward during commercials to catch back up with real time.
The logic that automatically records TV shows that it thinks I'll like started out a little rough, but has gotten better as I used the thumbs up and thumbs down buttons to rate shows. For example, because I watched some classic movies and some contemporary comedy sitcoms, it decided I must like classic comedy sitcoms. Next thing I knew it had recorded several hours of "I Love Lucy," "Gomer Pyle" and "Andy Griffith" for me. As soon as I thumbed down those TV shows that stopped.
The fact that the system's software can be updated over the phone connection is very cool. This has happened once already, and as a result, the TiVo box now has a few new features and bug fixes. It still has a few bugs in the on-screen menus, but they are minor (and I'm sure will be fixed in future system updates).
I bought the 30 hour version from the TiVo website instead of the 15 hour version from Fry's because I thought that I would need the space. However, I haven't yet come close to filling it, so it's likely the 15 hour version would have been enough.
