Pros:Tahoe coverage without roaming charges, Directory Assistance, Just added service in Chicago!
Cons:Spotty coverage in Chicago suburbs
I've been a PacBell Wireless customer for 1 year, and generally I've been pleased with my experience. However, a few weeks ago my phone broke and since I was a few days out from the expiration date of my contract, I decided to explore my options. What I found is that among PacBell, Sprint and Cellular One, PacBell is by far the best option for anyone who spends inordinate amounts of time in the Tahoe area! Since California and Nevada are part of their coverage area, you won't pay roaming charges, just long distance if applicable. Cellular One will charge you roaming and long distance and Sprint doesn't even have coverage in the area.
Another big PacBell plus for anyone who has a poor sense of direction, is the directory assistance. Operators will give you specific directions to your destination; one recently spent 10 minutes on the phone with me, with a map, as I drove around a San Francisco neighborhood searching for a restaurant. Without her help I may never have found it! They will also make reservations at a restaurant for you and give you show times for movies at the theater of your choice.
Previously, this opinion lamented the fact that PacBell did not have coverage in the Chicago area. I am pleased to report that this has changed! On my last visit to Chicago, I found that I had a strong signal in the downtown area and sporadic service in the surrounding areas. This is a HUGE improvement for PacBell!
