A Greek god of a camera from Olympus

Dec 28 '99

A Greek god of a camera. Ok, maybe not quite that good, but after a lot of research into digital cameras, and having used one of these cameras for 2 weeks, this is the one we decided on. Apparently a lot of people agree with us, since we couldn't order one on line without be put on a back order status. We finally bought one at a great camera store in downtown San Francisco.

I won't say it's the best digital camera on the market, but I will say that it is the best one we could afford. It has many features only found on more expensive cameras. It has adequate memory, and it uses a common flash card which can be purchased anywhere -- a consideration as some cameras use a proprietary card that can only be purchased from the manufacturer or from one of their service centers or retailers. Most of the commonly used features of this camera can be learned and understood easily and you can be up and running on this camera in 5 or 10 minutes.

It comes with a respectable collection of software, and it is also TWAIN compliant, which means you can acquire the pictures directly into your favorite graphics/photo manipulation program.

The camera does not come with a case, so that is a good first purchase in terms of accessories. The strap is easy to use. It is not as hard on batteries as some of the earlier digital cameras, but you might want to consider buying a battery charger and rechargable batteries, as it does have a considerable appetite for AA batteries. You can extend the battery life by using the optical range finder, rather than the LCD viewfinder.

Some of the icons on the camera are a little esoteric, and difficult to see. Some of the features have to be dug out through a series of menus, and you will need to refer to the manual a lot until you learn how to use the features that you use the most.

An excellent camera over all. The only additions I would wish for would be for interchangeable lens elements, and a better zoom feature -- maybe up to a macro lens capability.
