Pros:Excellent Sound Quality, Long list of Features, Uses GSM, good coverage
Cons:Set-up fee, Beyond terrible customer service
I've been with Pacific Bell wireless for 2 years now, and I have to say I am very satisfied with the service until recently.
Features such as VoiceMail, CallerID, Call Waiting, Conference Call, Call forwarding, etc. call come standard, and can be configured via the handset.
Calls are generally very clear except for highly remote areas. A few months ago, I drove to Los Angeles via Hwy 5 and had a near-perfect signal for the entire route. I also drove to Lake Tahoe a few days ago and experienced a near-perfect signal the entire way there.
Pacific Bell wireless uses a Cellular protocol known as GSM which stands for Global Standard for Mobile Communications. This is a very convenient system since all your account information as well as programmed telephone numbers are stored on a small, removable smart chip in the phone. This makes upgrading your phone extremely simple since all you have to do is remove the chip from your old phone, place it in your new one, and you're good to go.
Pac Bell also keeps you covered if you travel. In just about every state across the US (except for Alaska), you have at least some coverage. Your Pac Bell phone will also work in Canada and other countries that use the GSM1900 protocal.
Even though it is all digital, it has excellent coverage, superb sound quality, and a long list of standard features.
The only drawback to Pac Bell is that since it is all digital, when you're in an area with weak coverage, your calls can get dropped.
**Edited 5/26/00 Recently, I have had to deal with Pacific Bell's customer service and was appalled by the "service" I received. My bill was 1 month late because I was on vacation, and without any warning what so ever, Pac Bell disconnected my service. I contacted "customer care" and told them the check was in the mail and asked them to reconnect my service, and they refused, saying they had to receive payment, and after it was received, it would take 10 days to clear the check. After that (which would probably amount to at least two weeks w/o service) they said they'd reconnect me. They offered to accept payment via credit card, but would not reconnect my service for 24 hours, AND they said if I was to cancel the check I mailed in, (I would take the option to pay my entire bill for that month through my credit card, thus the check would amount to them receiving double payment) they would charge me a $20 fee. As far as I am concerned, this is a horrific way to treat customers. On top of that, I was on hold for 20 minutes before I was finally connected to a representative.
