Fischer, You'll Love 'Em

Sep 08 '00

Fischer may be a smaller name compared to Sony or others, but the VCR I bought about 8 years ago has never failed to work. It is fairly simple to use and program to record. Fischer was not rated as high in Consumer Reports as some other brands, but the salesperson where I purchased it, recommended it for the price I was looking to spend. Back then VCRs were anywhere from 140-400 or even more. The model I bought was about 225. It runs smoothly on a 4 head system, and is silent almost.

The remote that comes with the VCR was fairly easy to use, once you knew what buttons like "set" meant. The remote didn't operate the TV, except through the VCR, to switch channels. It was simple to set up also. There were not 1000 chords or anything that the average person could not do.

There was a tuner (as most VCRs have) that helped clear the picture somewhat, at least. It worked better than my TV antenna. My friend also has a Fischer product that has worked very well. Although I only use the VCR once in a while now - about 1 time a month, I used it more often the first 2 years - about 5 times a month. The warranty covers most normal things that could break down, which is nice to know since most repairs on VCRs can be quite costly. The normal warranty was 6 months, although that may be different in the year 2000.

The buttons on the VCR were pretty small, but those do not get used as often. The overall feel and quality of the VCR was solid. The buttons were not hard to press and the VCR itself was built wee (meaning that I could not see any flaws and the housing was together with no gaps that were not supposed to be there). The programming can be set as daily, weekly, or just a one time record. The calendar included is set to work in 2000 (even though was made in 1991). The instruction manual was helpful. The manual was long, though. But, that's fairly normal for electronic devices.

Also, Fischer is made (mostly?) in USA, for those who want that as part of their criteria. I think Fischer should be regarded a little higher in public based upon my experiences, at least.
