| Sulphur's Full Review: Cambridge Soundworks Model 88 Mini System |
Since there isn't a spot for 88CD reviews, this seems like a good place since the CD model is almost identical sound-wise to the model 88.
I have read many reviews of the 88 and 88CD and though all are complimentary, most seem rather sterile to me after hearing this unit. Well, it's time for a real gutsy review meant for those of us who would rather get down and dirty than pick nits when it comes to sound.
I ordered the highly publicized Bose Wave Radio and thought it was quite a performer. It looked good and, I thought, sounded the same. Then I took the Bose challenge to try the competition. Since the 88 and 88CD were THE competition, I ordered the 88CD.
When I first heard this unit my jaw dropped to the floor and my ears almost fell off my head. I stood there looking at this rather diminutive "table radio" and wondering how such tremendous sound could be issuing from such a small box. This truly is the "Towering Inferno" of compact stereos.
I ran it through all the tests I could think of and I just couldn't find anything that I didn't like about it. It literally blew the socks off the Bose. In fact, It blew everything off and then some. So the Bose got packed up and sent back.
I have shopped around for years looking for a portable stereo that I can live with, and up to now have found nothing. I listened to unit after unit, many with more controls-and more lights--than an alien spaceship. Many were almost as big as my old Volkwagen Bug. I just couldn't find anything that cut the mustard. In fact, most of the fancier ones almost needed a handcart to move them around. Then, along came the 88CD, and life got a whole lot better. I had found the genie in the bottle, or in this case a box.
Let me close by saying that if you are in the market for a compact stereo unit and you don't run right out and order this little gem, then shame on you. This unit is truly ear candy for the soul!!
