| mikej165's Full Review: Motorola StarTAC ST7760 CDMA / AMPS Cellular Phone |
If you're looking for a small, light, reliable PCS-capable phone that has long battery life, well, look no further. The Startac is what you need. There is little fault I can find with this phone and, despite that there are some phones that do more, I expect I'll be using this one for quite some time.
The truth of the matter is, if you phone is too large, too heavy, or both, you're not going to carry it. And then what good is it? This phone fits in your shirt pocket or even the front pocket of your pants. If that isn't good enough, the included belt clip will allow you to carry it on your waist and almost forget it is there.
Battery life on these models has improved dramatically in recent years. The included 'bubble' battery has outstanding standby and talk times. If that isn't enough, you can always purchase the auxiliary batter, which will double or triple your talk time, depending upon calling patterns.
Call quality has always been good for me and many times I've been told by people that they had no idea I was on a cellular phone. That speaks volumes for this phone's digital mode.
Usability is quite good and the phone's menu system is fairly simple to navigate. The backlit display is clear and easy to read.
There are things this phone doesn't have that I'd like to see. First, voice dialing, especially when driving, is an incredibly useful safety feature with 'Gee Whiz' status. I've had it on phones before and I sure wish Motorola would include it.
Another thing necessary is going to be a larger display. I don't know how Motorola is going to do it, but without that the usage of wirelesss Internet access is beyond painful. Screens are way too small and you'll be hitting the scroll button all day long until you wear a dot into your finger.
Finally, this phone doesn't have PIM (Personal Information Management) functionality beyond the storage of telephone numbers. If you need your phone to be a hybrid PDA then the Startac won't do it for you.
Due to the popularity of these phone, the availability of accessories is very good. You can walk into any Staples or Office Depot and purchase batteries, chargers, adapters and what not. You should never find yourself high and dry if you lose your battery or need to buy a charger.
Unless you need the features I've mentioned, this phone should be considered a Must Purchase. It can cost more than the average Nokia or Samsung, but the size and reliability factors, when considered, make it a strong, solid choice.
