| cecirdr's Full Review: Denon AHD-750 Headphones |
My quest was to find headphones efficient enough to be driven by my portable philips CD player *and* also provide great sounds from my home reciever. These headphones work well on both counts.
The 750's are rated at only 30 ohms resistance so they're quite efficient. As a matter of fact, I have yet to ever put the volume knob on my portable player above 4. The sound is so good it's like having a whole new Cd collection. (my home speakers are NHT). I'm not a bass fiend, but I find the bass response in these headphones to be remarkable. It's refined..not boomy. I'm also hearing passages in midrange and treble frequencies that I'd never heard before. Music is clear and crisp...not bright or boomy at all. My typical musical tastes..operatic (like Dawn upshaw, or Strauss's last four songs), Trans-siberian Orchestra (Christmas music meets Queen), Celine Dion, Erasure, Theta-wave meditation music. There's a good bit of bass in some of my music, but it's probably not as heavy as contemporary. music. My tastes lean to the more lyrical...preferring accurate, clean, discernable notes over bass volume or getting all the way down to below 20Hz. Even so...I think these headphone manage to go deep enough to please all but the most bass hungry. (I just hit the bass boost on my portable cd player if I want more)
Another plus for the 750's...they are extremely comfortable. I've listened for hours with no ear fatigue. (no acoustical fatigue..no physical fatigue or pain). I've even fallen asleep with them on. (listening to new age while in bed) The ear cups are soft and the headband tension is just right to lightly keep the cups pressed around your ear. The cups swivel a bit to allow them to conform more precisely to the shape of your head, but they don't rotate so far as to go flat for packing as some headphones do. The cord is nice and beefy and comes out of just the left ear cup...so no feeling like the cord is choking you. It sports a gold plated mini-pin connector and a gold plated full size adapter for your home systems. The 750's are an open design, but the cup fully encloses your ear and blocks out more sound than you would think. You can still hear outside sounds, but they are reduced somewhat. Music also doesn't seem to "spill out" of these headphones very much either...a benefit to other people sharing your space.
Originally I was shopping for grado's, but was unable to find them locally. I really didn't feel like ordering something without getting to try it out. So when a local stereo store had these, I opted (grudgingly) to try them out. I was bummed because all I had read was pointing me to the grado sr60 or sr80. Well, I was more than pleasantly surprised. I tried all the denon line-up. I must truthfully say that I was unimpressed with the 210's through the 550's...but when I hit the 750's...bliss. I tried the 950's also, but since I hadn't brought the best of cd's for evaluating performance, I was only able to detect better performance in a few passages.
So...for me...they're 30 bucks or so more expensive than the grado sr80's, but it's worth it for the comfort and greater efficiency. (no amp required for full rich sound from a portable). Try 'em..I think you'll like 'em.
