Car Stereo Installation for Toyota Paseo 92-95

Jan 09 '01

Mechanically challenged? Have no threat, I'm here to steer you through the haywire! Here's the scoop to get your after-market indash CD player installed quickly and professionally. I have pulled out and put in many car stereos in my past, but most importantly, I've put in an after market Panasonic CD player into my 1992 Toyota Paseo. I have also worked with the Circuit City "Roadshop" crew and sold car stereos for almost 4 years.
The follow directions are for a professional installation and I recommend that you be familar with operating an electric/gas soldering gun.
First and foremost, you need the tools listed below.
#1 phillips screwdriver
electrical tape
soldering gun and (solder)
OR "Butt" connectors instead of solder. (not recommended)
and the purchase the following:
only the wiring harness(no installation kit is necessary)
All of the tools can be found at your local Radio Shack. If you cannot locate the wiring harness at Radio Shack, try Circuit City.
Make sure the wiring harness you get is made for Toyota models years 92-95. This should be plainly displayed on the package itself.
Quick overview of what types of car stereos will fit into your Toyota.
YES - ISO mounted in dash CD players and cassette players.
NO - "two-shaft" tape units, "pull out" stereos* and trunk mounted CD changers.
*Pull out stereos can be mounted by modifying the dash. We will not discuss how to do that here.
Here we go...
1) Firmly pull out the rectangular dash plate the surrounds the factory stereo, ash tray holder and empty storage pocket. Gently tug near the bottom in an outward fashing toward yourself. Before the plate will come off completely, disconnect the white plug to the rear defroster button. The plate should come completely free.
2) Set this aside, and remove the four black screws (2 on each side) and pull the whole mounting bracket that holds the stereo and the ashtray and etc forward approximately 5 inches (that's about as far as it will go)
Disconnect the grey plug from back of the factory stereo, white plug(speakers) and the smaller round antenna plug (this resembles that of a 1/4 stereo headphones jack)
Now, take out the two silver screws from the right side of the metal bracket, then the other two from the left side. Keep these within close reach as we will reuse these screws to hold the new after market unit in place.
3) Remove the old Toyota factory radio, place the new stereo into the slot without tightening the screws for a quick fit. We want to see if this new radio will go. Now check to see if the screws will line up. You may have to fiddle with the play on the new unit by nudging the unit by pushing it in or pulling it out slightly. Once you are certain that the screws (both of them on each side) line up and can be screwed in all the way, you can remove the new radio.
4) Get your wire harness and matchup all the wires on both harnesses(red with red, purple/black with purple/black, etc...) If you need help with what the color coding means, the wiring harness packaging provides that information.
5) Solder all the connections (or use "butt" connectors-no solder required)
6) Wrap each individual wire with electrical tape
7) Plug the wiring harness from the back of the new stereo into the gray/white recepticals respectively as also the black round antenna jack too.
8) Turn on the ignition to the on position with your keys (without starting the car) Power is being fed to the unit from the car battery.
9) Turn on the car stereo. The unit should power up at this point and you will hear static for sound. (stations have not been preset). Get a quick visual to see that the unit is operating. If the preliminary checks seems fine then proceed to step 10. See troubleshooting in manual if otherwise)
10) Turn the power back off and pull out the keys from the ignition. Take away the slack in the wire by taping up the remaining wire together into a tight bundle. Slide the stereo back into the appropriate slot and place the 4 screws into the metal bracket and unit. The unit should be fastened securely at this point.
11) Push the metal mounting bracket (which holds the new stereo, ashtray holder and compartment tray) back into the original spot. Take care in noting that the defroster plug doesn't get pushed in with all the other wires. We need to plug this back into the switch (which is part of the panel) There are four plastic guides that protrude to help you locate the proper positioning of the metal guides. Once you find this position, it's easy to screw in the four black screws that hold the metal brackets to the chassis of the vehicle.
12) Plug in the defroster switch plug and slide the panel in an upward fashion while pushing the panel until it snaps into place. You may have to remove the plastic plate around the CD player of the unit if it appears that the panel will not fit around the dimensions of the player. See the instructions of the stereo to find out how to remove this faceplate.

That's it! Enjoy you new stereo! If you have questions about this please leave a comment for me. I'll check back to the epinions forum to see if you guys can come up with any questions. (I'm sure you will!)
