I've resisted the urge to by myself the kind of sound system that sends high school boys into fantasy land. Living in a one bedroom, city, apartment means that having a 'real' stereo would just alienate me from my neighbors because I wouldn't be able to stop myself from playing music as loudly as I wanted to hear it. Plus they take up more space than I can afford to give up.I've had an old Sony boom box cd player that was great because it had about 6 controls for the sound quality. Well the laser finally quit on old faithful so I had to get a new one and I was very disappointed in the current selection. They no longer offer the sound control option no matter what you pay. Now you get to pick the style music that you1re listening to and the sound is automatically preprogrammed to suit the notions of someone I've never met. The choices are rock, pop, dance and flat. So who listens to music that's flat? And exactly how does pop sound? I bought one anyway because functioning without music is not an option, and looking around seemed futile. They all appear to have the same fundamental design. In the next couple weeks I will return this sound system to the store because I just can't make it sound right. I miss the way my cd's used to sound. I like to make the vocals louder by playing with the controls til it sounds perfect for me.Someone who is a little more laid back about the sound coming out of their stereo substitute. It holds three cd's, which I like, and the sound is decent.I could have spent more but didn't have to last time and couldn't see the difference in the higher end models this time. Plus they are all really shiney now.I should mention that the looks of the new Sony's veer a little bit toward techno-plane crash. It's big and very silver......so what's wrong with black? I had to make an extra 3 feet of room for the sheen.....
