Very Helpful (Reply to this comment)

Never thought that there would be so much to consider in purchasing my 1st telescope. This has been very helpful in reaching my decision on a purchase!

Re: Best place for a beginner to start (Reply to this comment)

I'll ask about that. Howard Creech may have an answer on what epinions plans to do for making advice available when products come up.
Thanks for the feedback, though. I really appreciate it when people let me know what they think about the reviews I write, since I do spend some time on them.

Best place for a beginner to start (Reply to this comment)
by skyemoor
This captures all of the essential advice needed by beginners and then some. Too bad this couldn't be made a part of each telescope's Epinion's web page. I fear that only a small percentage of interested shoppers will read this, as one really has to go looking for it.
Please see what you can do about making it a shopper's guide that appears on every telescope's overview page.

Re: Superb advice! (Reply to this comment)

Thanks Tony,
I'm working on a sort of sequel to this- a telescope primer. The idea behind this one will be to give an overview of what types of telescopes there are. The article will outline what strengths and weaknesses they each have. As you can see, that's quite a bit of ground to cover, especially since I want to get into the mount question, too. This should help people become aware of what is available instead of just seeing what shows up at the department store, or the nature store in the mall (which tends to be about the same).

Superb advice! (Reply to this comment)

This is an excellent epinion that will help anyone considering buying a telescope (if they will pay attention to it). I hate to see people run out and buy a 60mm department store junk refracter when they could have had a nice equatorially mounted 4.5 inch reflector or even a 6 inch Dobsonian for the same price. Unfortunately, most of those people give up on astronomy before they ever see a single planet, nebula, or galaxy. BUT if they heed your advise, a happy astronomy future lies ahead!

As a matter of fact, I do work at the NASA Michoud Assembly Facility. The main line of work there is building the enormous orange external tanks for the space shuttle. However, we also do other work, including major hardware for the X-33, X-34, and other programs.
Thanks for the support on my review- I am hoping to help others find astronomy for themselves.

You have written a quality review that should provide tons of help to potential purchasers. I look forward to reading your future reviews. Always glad to welcome someone new from NOLA, my favorite American city...do you work for NASA at the Michoud facility?
