| vemartin's Full Review: Motorola PageWriter 2000X |
Can you say invaluable? See, I knew you could! That is how I view my Motorola Pagewriter 2000x. I was given a Pagewriter 2000x when I started my new job as a Software Engineer at a major communications company. It is my communications tool of choice when sending and receiving information to my fellow employees on the fly. I can be anywhere and receive a page and respond without having to look for a phone. When you are the go as much a I am, this ability becomes very important!
The unit itself is somewhat larger (by a factor of 1/3 or so) than a regular Motorola pager. It is equipped with a flip top and a small but viewable monochrome display. Under the display is a small but workable keypad, which functions pretty much like a computer keyboard, though I must admit the keys can only be manipulated one at a time, unless you have very small hands. Given practice however, the small size of the keys becomes a none issue. The screen and keypad can be backlit in less than desirable lighting situations.
The Pagewriter 2000x is equipped with a rechargeable battery, which has a life of about 3-4 days under normal usage. The unit comes with a charging base, which via a serial port connects to a computer. Once connected—via a program called Flex PC Partner, information from the pager can be created, edited, stored, backed up, and otherwise manipulated. The pager “talks” to the charger stand via infrared.
The pagers screen is menu driven and you can select among the following major options:
Read: allows the user to view incoming messages via and inbox. There is also a drafts, outbox and trashcan.
Write: allows the user to draft new messages.
Addresses: allows the user to access and manipulate the address book, which can be stored on a computer for simple editing. New address entries can also be inserted here and synced with the Pagewriter.
Customize: allows the user to change the look and feel of the pager screen and set certain parameters.
Set Time: self-explanatory.
Partner: allows the user to initiate two-way communications—via the Partner program—with the computer. Note: all Pager functions will be suspended while syncing.
Alarm Clock: self-explanatory.
Radio Mode: allows the user to select the pager functionality. The three choices are Send/Receive, Receive Only, or Off.
Power Off: self-explanatory.
Alert2000: Allows the user to set the pager alert sounds.
To Do Mrg.: self-explanatory.
Note Pad: self-explanatory.
Scheduler: self-explanatory.
With the Pagewriter 2000x—service by Skytel—I can send and receive pages, emails, and faxes real time. I have often used the Pagewriter to send and receive email to my spouse, family and friends. The pager comes with a toll-free number with also acts as an email address; for instance, my pager number is 8777767232. Someone trying to reach me can either call and leave a voicemail, call and leave a numeric message, or write me an email using the my pager number; i.e. 8777767232@skytel.com. It’s the coolest thing!
Now that I have been using the Pagewriter 2000xfor about 3.5 months, I would find it hard to live without it in the work environment. There have been times for instance when I have been paged at home about matters I have been able to resolve via the pager. Without the pager I would have had to come back to work. And my spouse likes the fact that no matter where I an she can pager me via email and know that I can respond via the same medium in mere minutes; we have held lengthy conversations this way!
Recommend it? You bet. If you don’t have one, well…
