Now while I am not doubting your hearing ability, I must comment on your comment.
Being a PROUD owner of a MD player, I record both MP3 files (with varying bitrates, though never below 112k) and from CD's via a digital cable. While this is not necessarily a fair comparison, I notice a world of difference between the two formats, even the 192k and CD recordings.
And while you claim you can't hear any difference between different bitrates, I won't even listen to 96k becuase the sound quality is so poor.
Again, I am not trying to shut you down, but I am saying that people do have different ears and therefore here things differently. I do not consider myself to have superb hearing, but I am by no means deaf. Let people test it out on their own. Some may find MP3 to be more than enough, while others may not be able to stand it.

Solution may not solve the original problem! (Reply to this comment)

While buying a CD burner and a new cd player is a good idea, I belive (I being one of these people) that one of the main reasons people look to MP3 players is for a smaller portable unit that is more durable than a CD player.
So people go to MP3 players in hopes of replacing their portable CD player. Many, however, are dissapointed with their purchase. I suggest that people also look into MD. This is like the advantages of MP3 (small, light, almost skip-proof) and the advantages of CD (near-more than MP3-cd quality music, inexpensive removable disc-based media) plus the age old cassette tape (record anything, anywhere). The only drawback to MD it is a different format, and a little less user friendly than MP3, altough a lot easier than CD-R!
I recommend that potential MP3 buyers also look at MD. While I realize that MP3 is the best for some people, I feel most will find MD to be more to their liking.
To gain a better understanding of the differences between these two, please read my Epinion - "Buying MP3? READ THS FIRST!!!," by Killerinstinct, under the "Why buy MP3" Category.
Hope this helps and Good Luck with your purchases!

I hate to break a string of HR's:) (Reply to this comment)

I think your Epinion was really good at describing what MP3's are and the major disadvantage of MP3 players right now (memory), which is why I R'ed it, but I'm not sure about the explanation of whether to get an MP3 player or not... I have a portable MP3 player, and I have song ranging from 2MB to 4MB on there right now with bitrates of 96k-160k, and there's absolutely no way I could tell which is which... unless you're hooking your MP3 player to a home theater system or have $100+ studio headphones (or have dog's ears) there's no way you'd think that what you're hearing is "low quality," especially with the earbuds lots of people listen with.. also you said a much better solution is recording MP3's to CD-R's... but it's the exact same quality!!
I think you had a very very well written Epinion though:)

...but I know so much more now! And based on your excellent real-world examples, I've concluded that MP3 is not for me. Thanks for helping me not make that purchasing mistake! :) tanster

what if (Reply to this comment)
by worldnick
now if they would only make a cd player that could read .mp3 files directly from the cd AND have a 6 MB buffer so you could pop in your 300 song mp3 cd and still get no skips... imagine the shear obviousness of it...
and then imagine it even smaller if you did it on mini disks...
