| amzelazny's Full Review: Bang and Olufsen Beolab 8000 Active Loudspeakers |
Primarily for reasons of space limitation and the need for minimalist design, I purchased these speakers approximately one year ago. Bang and Olufsen has an excellent reputation for high quality components, and I can attest for this, as I have owned many of their products over the last 15 years which have performed marvelously. These speakers, on the whole, do not disappoint.
Firstly, they have a unique design, in that they are self-amplified, unlike the vast majority of speakers on the market. An unusual feature of B&O's more recent stereo systems is that they do not contain speaker amplifiers; the amplifiers are contained within the speaker itself. The specifics of the advantages of this I must admit that I do not understand, but it probably allows for more advance cutting edge design.
The strengths of these speakers are in the high and mid range; in particular vocal music sounds tremendous. If anything is lacking, it's in the low range. I you like to listen to drum and bass all the time, these are probably not the speakers to get; I would suggest the Penta model.
These are pricey speakers, and you probably could get speakers of a similar acoustic quality for significantly less money. As is always the case with B&O, you pay a premium for interesting design and the high quality of the components.
