I have used my HD580 for 3 weeks and I have been missing what I called a quality sound.
From my tv/vcr, there is no problem in driving this HD 580 with DSP Pro. But, for my portable CD player and my computer, I have used only 1/2 the quality of what HD 580 can give me.
From the first impression of inserting the batteries to this amp, I already notice how weak is the construction of this amp. However, after plugging the Senn. HD 580, I notice a big increase in the volume. It's not only loud, but it is also balanced. The volume increases by double in my portable cd player. So, max volume is no longer required (using line out). Using the line out, with 1/2 volume setting of this amp gives me an equal volume of the max setting of my cd portable. Increasing the volume to over half way, I notice the difference in sound.
Listening to some of my pop music, I notice how tight is the bass without reducing or lowering the treble.
Now, about the processor in airhead, as I read other people review, yes........it's hard to notice the different. But, it's there. So, it would take a while for me to notice the difference. On the sad side, I notice the blink sound every now and then. The blink sound only lasts for 1/4 second from left to right channel. I am looking forward to solve this problem.
Now for batteries, this amp takes regular 2 AA batteries - alkaline, lithium, and the rechargeable ones as well (Ni-Cd/Ni-Mh). I use 1300mAh Ni-Mh and it's amazing.....I let it runs overnight and it's still running now (over 15 hours for sure).
Overall, the increase in volume for portable CD and computer is very satisfying, great in fact. Just wishing that Headroom will use a better case. Metal would be nice or harder plastic case. With low price of $129, this amp is a mandatory item for portable CD to drive any good headphone.
I read some review on the noise of this amplifier, but the one that I receive has a very low noise. In fact, I can hardly notice the noise in my Senn. HD 580. The noise is only detected when I maximized the volume in the amplifier, and just to let you know, with this level of sound, my ear will be damaged in 2 seconds if I decide to play any song because of the loudness of the sound. Now, if I use the line out of the portable CD player, even at maximum volume of amplifier, the noise is very low. Btw, if you ask what is noise.......it's a Hiss sound that you hear in the silence of sound (from any player).
Pros: Portable - very light, AA batteries source, AC power adapter optional, very good Amp (increase the volume dramatically). Good Price! Low noise.
Cons: I would do whatever I takes to protect this Amp. I would never drop this Amp to the floor. Oh...if you ask why, it's because the case is made of plastic. :-)
--update----------
The processor crossfeed of Headroom is indeed make lots of difference. THe easy way to test and hear is by adjusting the balance of the volume (left or right)......turn them all the way to one or the other...And you can hear the difference with or without the processor. Sorry for the mislead information in my first review.....
Good job Headroom!
