Installing a CD Changer

Jan 06 '01

OK so you bought a CD Changer or your about to do it and you want to save the money on installation and you want to do it yourself.
First off this is really a BAD idea unless you are a trained professional!!!

You insist on doing it yourself, well then I will help you to make it happen. There are basically two types of CD Changers, which I will explain how to install both.
RF Modulated Changer and Changers that a controlled by the head unit.

Changers controlled by the head unit.

First things first you need to know if your head unit will control the changer you are about to buy. You can get this information at your local car stereo store or one in your area.

Decide where you want the CD Changer mounted. It needs to be a dry location.

You have just a few connections to make. There will be an output from the changer to the head unit, which is supplied with the changer, an acc and a memory power connection and a ground connection. Make sure that when you ground the unit to the vehicle you scrape away the paint so you get a good ground.

You will need to get to the back of your head unit to plug in the cord from the output of the changer into the input receptacle of the head unit.
After you make this connection you need to route the cord underneath the carpet back to the location of the changer.

Be very careful not to route it to where any moving parts of the seats could pinch or damage the cord, also make sure no screws you have to replace to hold the upholstery in places will not screw into the cord.

Once all the connections are made and the changer is mounted in a secure dry location you are ready to go. Put some CD's in the magazine and go driving.

RF Modulated Changers are pretty much the same with one exception the output wire from the changer to the head unit interconnects with the antenna wire.

You need to decide where to mount the control for the changer usually on the dash somewhere in a pocket or somewhere it is easiest and safely viewed. once it is mounted plug it into the changer.

Once you get the antenna wire plugged into the adapter (usually supplied) and the adapter plugged into the head unit everything is the same as with a head unit controlled changer.

Good Luck!
Remember it is always BEST to Let a professional do the install.
