If you know a great deal about different stereo systems and want to compare this one, my experience may not be that much help to you since I'm not an expert. This is more for someone who is not an expert on music or sound and wants to buy a stereo that doesn't cost too much and learn how hard it will be to get started and what the result will be.
Buying stereos on two hundred dollars a day or less
My wife found this on sale some months ago at the price club near us. Since this particular model was going out of production we got a great deal on it. The CX-ZL10 looks much like the CDS-MD50 pictured above except slightly cooler. From the description, I gather we have five more watts but twelve fewer presets. I don't know if they still make any models with turn tables, if you still have LP's you should check.
Performance
My wife was initially worried if thirty watts was enough for a stereo system. Probably not if you have huge parties and your own house, and tolerant neighbors and a taste for noise. We certainly have all the volume we can use without disturbing the apartments next to us. In fact, even if we decided to give our noisiest neighbors what they deserved and crank it up, we still probably have more than we would need. Our apartment building has thin walls, so you might need more power to get revenge on your neighbors.
Using the speakers that came with the system, both radio and CD's sound great to my unpracticed ear. I'm no expert, but I'm not deaf, and I know what static sounds like.
Set Up
Skipping over problems obviously my fault which were resolved without calling the manufacturer, we had only one difficulty. The turn table didn't work, and several phone calls to the free 1-800 number failed to resolve the problem. After bringing it to the repair center, we discovered a switch which the voice on the phone said was supposed to be off was in fact supposed to be on. The trip was free however, nobody surprised us with hidden costs for using the warranty.
We have each speaker on top of a separate book case, and the radio antenna reaches across several book cases. We get good reception without any contact with an outside antenna.
