Techno freaks... you gotta have it

Is there any question DVD is superior to VHS, I doubt it. A better question might be when should you invest in one.
I believe most knowledgeable people in the area of electronics, would agree that digital disc based recording and play back, will eventually replace analog tapes. DVD represents a giant forward step in that direction for two reasons. First the increased capacity allows for recording of full length movies eliminating the need for those dinner plate sized laser disks. Secondly, and perhaps most important, DVD is backwards compatible, meaning you can still play your CD’s in the same machine. Goodness, what will they think of next, you won’t have to discard all those old CD’s when you upgrade. Gee... will it play my old 8 tracks too?
As with any new product there are always those early adopters that have to have the latest and the greatest. That will push DVD sales to even larger numbers, but it’s not likely this media will actually replace VHS until such time it offers the same capabilities, mainly its recording ability.
In the mean time these two vastly different systems will probably operate side by side for the next several years. DVD has some obvious advantages, picture clarity being one of them due to its higher screen resolution. And of course, let’s not forget its main claim to fame sound!
So should you invest in one? The answer may be more dependent on the equipment you presently own. If that consists of a 19" TV with a single speaker, you won’t derive much benefit from a DVD player. On the other hand if we’re talking about a large screen system with surround sound... what are you waiting for?
The rest of us are just going to sit back and wait until prices come down!
