| bofnyc's Full Review: Yamaha GX 500 Stereo Mini System |
Let me begin by saying that I'm seeing this system heavily discounted at many locations, including J&R here in New York and on Crutchfield's web site. Originally in the $400 price range, both J&R and Crutchfield are offering it for $239. If you're in the market for a new system and you can find it at that price, grab it without thinking. I just bought mine at J&R and I really feel like I did well for the price. It's different from other minisystems out there in that there's no Las Vegas type light show when it's operating, which I really like. It looks quite dignified, which is a nice change from most other systems. But more importantly, the sound is nice and clear. That being said, I do have some complaints about the system. First of all, it seems to lack the punch I was hoping for. The sound doesn't really seem to fill my studio apartment. I may be able to resolve that easily enough by strategically placing the speakers, but I'm not sure. Also, the system has a few gimmicks which I find annoying. First of all, it has a feature called "Ymersion", which is supposed to give some type of 3D effect to the sound. Personally, I think it sounds like you've blown out your speakers. Another review mentioned that it works well with certain types of music, so maybe it's just my tastes. Also, the system has something called "bass boost", which, well, boosts the bass sound. I have this feature on all the time, because without it, it sounds like a clock radio. It's not a big deal, but it just seems like a totally unnecessary feature. Also, I'm not crazy about some of the basic functions of the system (i.e., when one disk is over it doesn't automatically "roll" into the next disk--you have to select that disk to play it), but these really are minor complaints. As I said earlier, if you're in the market for a system and you can get it at $239, jump on it. The sound is crystal clear, it's a breeze to set up, and it looks really great. I'm not a big listener to the radio, but it has 40 presets. It also only has a single cassette deck, so if you like dubbing from tape to tape, this isn't the system for you.
