| Hitomi's Full Review: Pioneer PureVision PDP-505HD 50 in. Plasma Televis... |
Being an audio and video freak (not to mention someone dangerously hooked on Japanese animation and video games), Plasma televisions turn me on in a quite disturbing way! On those lonely nights, I would quietly undress, plop myself onto the the computer chair, and drool at sexy images of Plasma televisions on my computer screen....
"Oooohhhh these make me so hot!!! I want one SOOOOO bad!!!!!"
Never EVER did I imagine myself owning one! After all, the damned things cost $10,000 to $20,000 (MUWAHAHAHA I can almost buy a HOUSE with that
much money!!!). The dream of one day watching anime or playing video games on a Plasma was.....well....only a dream. But, whoever said dreams never come true?
I...I....I just wet myself....in a GOOD way!
Here's the story: My uncle, a very wealthy man (worth millions!!!) is a soon to be retiring man. A long time ago, my mother mentioned something about him giving his last paycheck to our family. To make a long story short, he got his last paycheck and gave it to us!!! My share was a good $20,000 (after all there's only 3 in out family).
"What the poop am I going to do do with all this money?!?!"
As you probably already know (after all, what am I reviewing? ; p), I used it to purchase a Plasma television (online of course!).
Outward Appearance, WOWEEEEEEEEE!
Already owning a beautiful Sony HDTV (of which I now plan to sell, anyone interested?), I didn't expect to be "wowed" by the outward appearance of this television!
"The Sony was pure beautiful, it'll never be topped"
However, upon opening the HUGE box and unleashing this beast, I found it heavenly!!! This thing is pure sexy! It's a 50 incher (oooohhh, aaahhh), widescreen, and flat as a board. Unlike other televisions, it is EXTREMELY thin, making it ideal for space conservation! It also looks great wherever you put it (I have it on the love-seat near my window, it's my lovely puppy love dog).
Pioneer, being the awesome electronics company they are, decided to include a stand with this television (well...at least I *think* it was Pioneer's decision....it *could* have been the company I bought if from that included it, tee hee! But they were awesome too!!)
Hookup
Installing components into the Pioneer PDP-505HD was no difficult task. In fact, even my mother (a total goof when it comes to electronics) plugged in her receiver with NO problems. In the back of the tv, you'll find hookups galore. Off the top of my head, I believe there were 2 s-video hookups, 3 a/vs, 2 components, and 2 RFUs (for that old fossil of a video game system ; p). The unit came bundled with a component video cable (this will get you the best quality image and sound quality out of your DVD player...but unfortunately not all players have the ability to hook up component cables).
As of now, I have a Sega Saturn, Dreamcast, DVD Player, Laserdisc Player, Playstation, N64, and receiver hooked up to the Plasma all at the same time. Most other television could never accomplish the admirable task of having THAT many units attached to it in harmony without the aid of some kind of add-on.
Overall, no other unit can even TOUCH the Pioneer PDP-505HD when it comes to hooking up devices (it puts shame to my Sony HDTV).
Image Quality
Probably not your surprise, the Pioneer PDP-505HD produces the most amazing images I have ever seen! Take a 17 inch computer monitor (computer monitors are known for their great images and high resolutions), triple it's size, make it widescreen, and improve it's image quality by 100....THAT'S how great this television is! By viewing DVDs on this unit, I can really notice the limitations of that format. Plasma tv is truly heaps beyond its time.
Colors, which I never new existed on my Sony HDTV, blew across my eyes rich and vibrantly. Dusty and foggy images are cleaned up, shimmering was reduced, color bleeding seems non-existant, and details that were once unnoticeable...are now seen in full force! Amazing....
If you are wondering how video games look, well it's a mixed bag. Seeing Dreamcast games were simply awe-inspiring, yet most Playstation games looked like garbage (the 2-dimensional ones on average were AMAZING though). This, however, is not the fault of the Plasma, it's by all mean the limitations of the Playstation. You see, some are fooled into thinking the Playstation can create gorgeous graphics. However, "normal" televisions blur images and do not properly display what images should REALLY look like. Now that HDTV and Plasma are out, one can TRULY see what is coming out of their DVD player, laserdisc player, vcr, or video game system.
If you are considering buying a Plasma (or even an HDTV for that matter), and watch a lot of television programming, do NOT settle with "regular cable". Normal cable looks like complete poo when viewed on this set, while digital looks gorgeous!!! Buying a HDTV or Plasma = getting digital cable...END OF STORY ^_-
Audio
While I claim to be somewhat of an audio buff, I care far less about it that I do video. The audio aspect of the Pioneer PDP-505HD is simply amazing, yet I do not see much of a difference between it and my Sony HDTV. Audio experts are probably loading their guns while reading this, but I don't care. In my opinion, while the audio is GREAT, it won't sound much different to the average Joe than an HDTV set would...
Is it worth its high price?!
Well, the average consumer will laugh at its sickenly high price! To be honest, most people are not like me, and will not find this a great investment. DO NOT sell your children, skip college, become a prostitute, or sell your home to obtain this television.
If, however, you are made of money, and LOVE a great home theatre experience, BUY THIS NOW!! It's probably the greatest television you can own at this point in time! It's got hookups galore, has THE greatest image quality, has spectacular audio quality, conserves space, looks like it's from the heavens, and will make you the envy of all your friends!!!
Warning, however, if you buy this, you may never leave your home!
