| Gary_White's Full Review: Sony DHC MD555 Stereo Mini System |
This great mini system was originally offered at $800 MSRP and would have been worth every penny if I had purchased at that price. Luckily I picked it up at Crutchfield for a close-out $350. I bought it to make MD mixes from several CD's which it does beautifully by simple programming (5 CD's, any track transfering to up to any of 5 MD's). I just walk away and come back later with a finished mix; far better than high speed dubbing where you have to baby sit the system. I tend to leave 2-3 MD's in the system when I mix by music genre (i.e. a favorite performer, etc)and then add to it until the disc is full.
The unexpected bonus for me came in two great features for recording off the air. First you can capture 6 seconds of prestored audio which means you can go into record mode once you know a song has started instead of mistakingly picking up a commercial or DJ talk and not miss any of the start of a song. The second feature is a precision editing capability for removing unwanted material from a track (like DJ barge in at the end of a song). You can increase the editing resolution to 1/86th of a second!! By use of the jog dial, you can set the edit point by audio rehearsing until you get exactly what you want.
