| IchBenYoda's Full Review: EchoStar 3720 Dish Network System |
I'm going to review the equipment, the channels and the customer service. I think that all three of these should be taken into consideration before you choose.
First, the equipment is great. It's easy to use and set up. I hooked the dish receiver up in about two seconds. the remote took about ten seconds to figure out and 5 to program. The only problems I've had with the receiver are, one, you can't set a timer on it to change the channel when something comes on. Makes recording things while your away a hassle. Two, for some reason, every now and then the system freezes up like a computer. Instead of ctrl-alt-del, I've discovered you have to remove and re-insert the smart card. Kind of annoying, but no big deal. If you've got the money, and you record a lot of things, get the more expensive receiver.
Okay, the channels. There are a ton of channels. I've got over 500 channels. And I'd have more if I paid for all the international channels. It's insane just how many channels there are. Now, having to pay extra for networks, east, west or local, is a little annoying. Same with the little superstations package. My thought is that should be part of it. They charge you enough for the monthly fees anyway. I have had trouble with volume on these things. I've had to crank the volume on my TV and surround sound to make out some channels before, especially pay-per-view stuff. It's only happened a couple of times, but it's annoying.
On to customer service. Typically, it's okay. You're on hold for at least 15-20 minutes, but once you get through, they take care of you. Except, when it comes to getting that rebate they promised you when you bought the system. It has been a year and I had to get their legal department into it. They promised me checks on several different occasions. And customer service could never find out why I hadn't gotten it yet. They finally figured out the screw up about 2 weeks ago, 9 months after I was supposed to receive the check. Now, they promised me free service for three months because of my trouble, and the check is coming at a time I need it more than I did back then, but that's not the point. Don't get suckered in by the word free. Buy from a dealer and then tell him to get the rebate from Dish. If he won't do that, then go to someone else.
