| epinburk's Full Review: RCA DS2122RD Single LNB DIRECTV System |
DirecTV is an excellent television add on! I have never owned cable service, nor satellite tv service ... now I can't imagine life without it.
purchase.
I bought it online (800.com) with their "free install" offer.
install.
The installation was smooth. The system requires that you have a phone jack near the base unit if you want to order pay-per-view movies. My installer added a phone jack so I did not have long lengths of phone cable laying around. I learned from the technician that you do not have to install the dish at "the highest point on the roof" this is a dish-stereotype left over from the point / directional old-school style dishes. Since the RCA dish didn't need the absolute positioning I had it installed near the ground at the base of the house -- this is nice because a certain amount of vegetation can grow around the dish partially hiding the 18" circumference.
service option.
I have the standard Direct Select service (19.99/mo.), with the local channel option (5.99/mo.). Initially I had only the Direct Select option; however after turning the unit on and noticing I did not have any of the major broadcasters (NBC/CBS/ABC) I decided to add the local channel ability. You can accomplish this by calling a number listed in your guidebook. The modification is done over the phone. The associate told me it could take up to 4 hours -- the added channels were available immediately! Recently I upgraded to the next tier of service 34.99 for a dozen more channels. I still dont have all the movie channels like HBO, and starz.
overall.
The system is great. The picture is reliable and excellent quality. I have a RCA tv so and the DirecTV really complements the experience! bear in mind that storms will effect your reception; although in over a years worth of t.v. watching I have only experienced a disruption (frozen picture for a few seconds) about 6 times. That is pretty remarkable considering I live in Seattle and it is VERY overcast and cloudy much of the time throughout the year!
