Aiwa NSX-V8000 mini-system

Apr 19 '00

I bought the Aiwa NSX-V8000 a few years ago because I thought it was a great buy to get a cd player (3cd changer), radio, and double tape deck all in one for a couple hundred dollars. It worked fine for about a year. My only complaint was that I had very little control, in terms of sound. There are no bass, treble, or mid knobs- instead you can combine a few preset sounds- the genres "rock", "pop", or "classical" with the places "live", "hall", "disco". I guess these are easy to understand options, but anyone who is very particular about their sound will not be satisfied.

The problem:
A little over a year after purchasing the Aiwa NSX-V8000 mini-system (the warranty was for one year), the cd player stopped playing certain cds. One or two months later, the cd player would not play any cds. I spoke to 3 other people who had had the same problem with their Aiwa mini-systems a little over a year after purchase. I took the mini-system to The Wiz where I had bought it to see if the player needed cleaning or repair. The salesman told me that there was a problem with the laser (that reads cds), and it could not be repaired. He said that the cd players on all the Aiwa mini-systems (don't forget this was a few years ago and might not be true anymore), stop working after a little over a year!

So I bought a separate cd player and hooked it up to the one extra input on the mini-system. But then after a few months I could not record from one tape to another without a horrible whirring sound ending up on the new copy.

This mini-system might be good to take to college for a year because it is cheap, easy to use, and takes up very little space. But it's not really worth a couple hundred dollars if you are going to have to buy a new one in a year. For anyone who plans to seriously listen to music for the rest of their life, I suggest buying separate components, rather than any mini-system. That way, if just the cd player breaks, you don't have to replace everything. But, if you really want a mini-system, I would stay clear of Aiwa.
