The Sixth Sens(ia), Choosing the right film

Jan 19 '00

Ever wonder how those spectacular calendar scenics look the way they do? Sure it has a lot to do with the camera and the guy behind the camera. A big part of those scenes is actually in the film used. Both the film speed (ISO rating)and the manufacturer are key elements in producing an exceptional image.

As a professional photographer, I have been shooting on slide films for 11 years and began my collection using Kodachrome 64. This (ISO 64) slow speed film has a tight grain used for large reproduction prints. One degree slower is Kodachrome 25, with an even tighter grain and still higher reproduction abilities. However, over the years I've learned about Fuji's more colorful family of professional films. Though slightly grainier, almost to where you can't detect a difference with the human eye, just in the last decade, the slide film favorite has become Fujichrome's Velvia with an ISO 50, actually metered at ISO 40. The only downside is the extreme darkness in the shadows. It pays to meter off dark objects whereas in Kodachrome 64 and 25, there is less color all together.

Luckily there has been a compromise developed for these films. Enter Fujichrome Sensia II, with an ISO 100. Though a bit faster that Velvia, it can satisfy a wide range photographic needs. The faster film speed enables you to shoot those glorious landscapes without shooting on the slower, more expensive Velvia and print enlargements as high as 11 by 14 show little difference in graininess.

If you want to break into landscape photography and keep within your budget, try Fujichrome Sensia II. This is a great film to use especially if you're hesitant about slide films at first.
