Navigator Hands Free Kit

I'm a one man business, I drive 35,000 miles a year, and I need to be able to keep in touch with my clients. Cell phones give me that ability wherever I am.

But driving with a hand-held cell phone is both inconvenient and dangerous. I've tried the earphone/microphone products and found them somewhat difficult -the earphone tends to fall out of my ear or it's just uncomfortable, and you still have to hold the phone and try to dial it with the same hand. Worse, the darn things keep breaking- the wire broke internally on the first one I bought, and the second one broke at the connector so it no longer will stay plugged in.

There are nice hands free kits available for permanent installation. Unfortunately, my car just doesn't have any good place to put them- it's a Dodge Intrepid; lots of room, but just not in the right places.

I saw an ad for this CCM Navigator Hands Free Kit. They had a model for my Nokia 6100, it plugs into the cigarette lighter, and it looked like it wouldn't take up much space, so I ordered it.

It does fit very well. It comes with an extender stalk that I had to use to get the cradle out beyond my gear shift handle, and there's nothing wrong with the quality of that part. I can reach it easily to answer it or dial, the volume is adjustable, and it also recharges the phone automatically.

The speaker quality isn't too bad. It's a little tinny, and it faces away from you, but I could live with it. However, for the person at the other end of the conversation to hear me, I have to almost yell, and they complain that my words are being clipped or that it's choppy. Sometimes that's an advantage- I really don't want to have long conversations while driving, so the difficulties do encourage people to get to the point quickly. In general though, it would be better to have a clear conversation.

The other problem I have with this is getting my phone to snap into the cradle, particularly when it's cold (the plastic probably contracts). Sometimes I think it's in so I start driving, and then it pops out a few seconds later. It's impossible to get it into the cradle with one hand, so I have to pull over or just go without it.

I wouldn't say this is an entirely useless product, but it's not good enough for my needs. I'm going to have to find some way to get something better installed.
