| blue_energy's Full Review: MPTrip MP3-CD Player |
Due to the popularity of mp3's, it's inevitable that someone would invent a CD player that can play mp3's burnt onto a CDR or CDRW. After all, portable mp3 players have only a limited amount of storage, while CDRoms seems endless in comparison.
I bought the MpTrip because I did not want to be limited to a certain number of songs. Sometimes I like to song surf. MpTrip allows me to do that. It's a good product with great options such as ability to play regular CD's and a built-in circuit for recharging ni-cad.
However, there are some things that you should know. The MpTrip is not a brand-name product. So when you receive it in the mail, don't expect too much in terms of a packaging. There's no registration card, no warranty either. I think the only thing warranty is the return policy by the vendor. Pass that 30 days, you might not be able to get service afterwards.
The manual is just a piece of paper with many mis-spelled or grammatically incorrect sentences. Here's an example, "Using 2 x 1.2V Ni-Cd Batteries. When LCD show insufficient power, use external power supply adaptor can re-charge the batteries." While not terribly bad, it shows that it's probably not made in the USA with pride.
When you can decipher the instructions in the manual, operation is fairly simple. The file sorting needs a little bit of time to get use to. The max directories and mp3 files this baby can handle is 256 directories and 512 mp3 files.
The mptrip case is pretty much all plastic, so dropping it will be fatal. But it is pretty light.
Using 2 AA alkaline batteries only got me about 3hrs of play time, I imagine (haven't tried yet) the Ni-Cd will be less. The unit comes with a handy dandy AC/DC adaptor. But be sure to remove those alkalines before plugging in to the adaptor, you don't want to accidentally start charging your alkalines.
All in all, the mptrip is a pretty nice unit worthy of being purchased. It hasn't given me any trouble yet, and bumping it on purpose hasn't made it skip yet. At $125, it's definitely a bargain!
