| grapeskittles's Full Review: Iomega Hipzip 31311 40 MB MP3 Player |
I had been thinking about getting any MP3 player alot because I have about 200megs worth of mp3’s on my hard drive. So, when Christmas time came, I went shopping! I looked at a lot of mp3 players, and not so many were Mac compatible but the Iomega HipZip was. This is a plus because there IS a growing amount of Mac users out there. So I did some shopping around to find the best price and I found it for $259 and FREE overnight shipping on mp3shopping.com. When it came, I was very pleased. In the box comes a usb cable, an AC adapter for its rechargeable battery, headphones (which weren’t really comfy), a case for the player, 2 40meg disks, manuals and software CD Roms, and of course the player itself. The manuals say to plug the player into the wall and into your computer. The battery does not come charged, so you have to do this of course. They say it takes 2 hours, although it didn’t take that long for me, but you should leave it there to get max power. But don’t fret, you can still use it while the battery is charging. It is very simple to use, the manual is very well written and understandable. The disks are extremely thin and fragile looking, so I would recommend handling them with care. As soon as you have the player connected to your computer (and the AC if its not charged), stick in a disk and turn on the player. A disk shows up on your screen, just like any other drive (ie. zipdrive, floppy drive, cd drive). From there, you just click on the icon. It comes with Windows media player songs already on them, but you can easily drag and drop them into the trash (personally, I didn’t think they were all that interesting). Then start dragging and dropping your songs onto the disks. It is really fast, even though USB is only 12kbps. I put 16 songs on one disk in a minute or so. Also, the amount of songs you can put on the disk varies with the file size, obviously. I fit 16 mp3’s on one and only 10 on the other. It all depends. To the interface now...
There is an operating system on this player called Dadio that alows you to
choose the play mode(ie random, repeat..etc), manage the songs, mess with bass and treble and play mode, turn on and off the backlight (very helpful), get song info, get disk info, and get player info. Since the player does act as a zipdrive it does have the whoosh sound, that initialization sound. So it is a bit delayed when changing tracks and fastforwading through a song. In the playlist manager menu you can clear the list and choose only a certain few of the songs on the list which comes in very handy because of the delayed reaction of this player. On the screen, it tells you the name of the song in moving text(my favorite quirk about this product), the time of the song (like a cd player), the battery juice left, and the volume among other things.
The player itself looks awesome. True, it is a bit bigger and heavier than most mp3 players, but the coolness of it is completely worth it. The disks are what make this player truly unique. No other player I have found has disks, yes they all have flash memory, but that’s not the same. You can have an infinite amount of disks with this player, but most mp3 players only allow you up to a certain amount of memory. One other unique thing to this player is that you can put more than just mp3's on the disk! You can put anything on the disk (provided its under 40 megs). So it acts as a portable zip/floppy drive. Overall, this player is absolutley worth every penny and it’s my new favorite toy!
