| epinburk's Full Review: Linn LK85/LK140 Stereo Power Amplifier |
The Linn LK85 is an excellent amplifier.
Black box.
I love the Linn Black Box. Up until a year ago everything they designed was housed within a black box with a subverted interface. Today Linn is putting out components with a variety of colors and finishes. For the uninitiated, the black box unit begs the question: "what is that?" For the audio hifi gourmet, the box looks great + quite other to what the other components out there look like.
Sound.
Warm. Punchy and alert; smart sound. If you like the Linn sound you will love this unit. The power output of 85 watts is more than enough to drive a pair of Keilidh speakers.
Audition.
As in my other Linn reviews, I highly recommend auditioning this unit. Even if you weren't stunned with the sound when you first heard it -- you will come back to it the way I did. I auditioned at least two dozen components / setups before deciding on this unit! This amplifier is an excellent value.
*UPDATE* December 21, 2000
I forgot to mention that I am using the LK85 in an Aktiv system. I have two LK85 units powering a pair of Keilidhs. One LK85 drives the Treble, the other LK85 powers the Bass. The way you accomplish this is by having your Authorized Linn dealer install cards into the amplifiers. Once these modifications are completed you must use bi-wire to connect the LK85s to each speaker. The result? The increased clarity and overall sound is noticeably better with an Aktiv configuration. I am not an audio engineer but the way I understand it is the power coming from each amplifier is split from the start. The separation of the Bass and Treble amplification insures a cleaner path to the speaker, and a better sound.
