| elchris's Full Review: Velodyne 12" Powered Subwoofer VA-1512 |
I thought and thought about a way to describe this subwoofer. After much pondering, I decided there was only one way to describe its awesome performance…. 'WOW!"
When I saw this subwoofer at the store as an 'open box buy,' I had to have it. I didn't have the money, but I found a way and made it mine. I'd heard of Velodyne's reputation, so research wasn't a question. But enough about that… let me tell you about the speaker.
It has a 12" front firing and a 15" downward firing woofer, both of which are powered with 250 watts of power! It has all the controls one would ever need; it has: volume, phase, low-pass crossover, auto on (on or off switch), audio or video mode switch, normal bypass / lowpass crossover switch, highpass 100 or 80 switch and left and right input and outputs. With these controls, this subwoofer is perfectly compatible with any home theater system no matter how simple or complex.
When you have 250 watts pushing a 12'' and a 15'' speaker, it lets you 'feel' movies like you never have before. The clean and clear bass rattles your heart when guns fire, bombs explode, even when a door is violently slammed and this puppy is only about 1/3 turned up. The bass is so crystal clear and deep, I swear it is comparable to the theaters in my neighborhood.
Not only do digital movies (as well as standard VHS) sound extraordinary, but CDs and radio sound great too. Now I get complements all the time from my friends, and my system has become one to be compared with. I can not recommend this subwoofer enough.
If I had to pick one negative thing to say about this speaker, it would have to be that it is a little big and boxy (but what do you expect for a subwoofer). The size is 18'' x 19 - 1/8'' x 20'' (W,H,D) and weighs 67 lbs. However, it can be as ugly as it wants to be with sound like it has.
