| jbray4913's Full Review: Yamaha GX 500 Stereo Mini System |
Wow! This unit ROCKS!! I was hesitant to buy a mini system from Yamaha, but I've heard some good reviews about it, so I went ahead and did it. This is an awesome "High End" unit! It has many features, but not as many as I though it would have for the price I paid.
First off, The the amplifier is rated at 80 Watts a channel at 6 Ohms. It comes with 2 speakers that you can get either with a black finish, or a cherry wood finish. I got the black finish because they were $100 cheaper than the cherry finish. It's also got an alarm clock so you can wake up to whatever function you chose to wake up to. It pretty tricky to set, but you'll get it. It has a subwoofer output that already has a low pass filter on it. This is good for people that want to hook a powered subwoofer that does not have a built in crossover. A remote control is included as well. It does most everything that you would expect it to. There are 3 preset EQ modes that aren't to bad, but it would be better if the unit had a fully adjustable EQ.
The CD player is rather nice too! It has a 3 disc cd changer. You can also change 2 discs while one is playing. The remote has direct access buttons so you can jump right to the track you want.
The tape deck is quite unique. It is a "Tray Load" tape player. It's similar to a CD player, where as you have a drawer that slides out to put the tape in. It's also got the basic functions of a tape player, Dolby B noise reduction, Auto Reverse, and CD to Tape recording.
The Pros, Well, i haven't really been able to put this unit through a "Test Drive" yet, but from what I've heard so far, it's got nothing but great sound and lots of features. The sound is SO CLEAR! You can't here ANY distortion, even when the volume is all the way up!! This was very surprising to me. The speakers can handle a lot of volume with minimal distortion. It best to have a powered sub to handle the low frequencies, so you can turn the bass down on the unit, therefor taking the job of reproducing the low frequencies off of the main 2 speakers.
The Cons, Better Instructions!!!!!!!! The instruction booklet was not very helpful. It took me 30 minutes to set the timer. I was able to set the timer to tell it what time to come on and go off, but it was turning the timer on that was the hard part. It took me a while to figure it out, but I finally did. the volume is very slow to respond. It takes forever to get the volume up to about level 20. This was a good volume level for most everything, but it just takes so long to get it there.
Oh well...i guess I'll just have to live with the cons for now, because I've never heard a system sound as good as this one does!!
