Creative's Nomad 32MB Player

Aug 23 '00

I bought Creative Lab's 32MB Nomad player a couple months ago and last night I broke it. I was so frustrated with the fact that it was not functioning properly, I slammed it against my desk and the LCD display ruptured. Actually, it still worked for another 30 minutes and then it died for good.

My problems with the player started when I opened the box. I followed the start-up directions and charged the player first in its cradle. Well, these batteries never worked. The batteries would die within maybe ten minutes of using the player. I solved this dilemma by using regular store-bought batteries. But since you can only use these rechargeable batteries when it's in its cradle, I had to make sure to switch them before placing it in the cradle.

The Player has to be in its cradle if you want to download or erase MP3s from the player. It also has to be switched on. Whenever I placed the player, with its dead rechargeable batteries, in the cradle it would charge for maybe 10 seconds and then indicate that the batteries were charged. Well, twenty seconds later the batteries would be dead again and it would shut itself us. Thus ending my activity in the cradle. The charger would NOT recognize that the batteries were dead and start charging again. This would happen over and over, never giving me enough time to download and/or upload music to the player.

I finally had enough last night and I tried to shake the cradle trying to get it to charge and accidently broke the player. I guess I could have tried purchasing new rechargeable batteries but the problem was really with the cradle. Also, this system never worked correctly from day one.

Overall, I like the design and functionality of the player, if it ever worked! I also like the fact that it had a voice recorder and FM radio. The memory was a bit small. Creative must develop a better linking mechanism which is does not rely on the terrible rechargeable batteries.

My next MP3 player will most likely not be a Creative Labs product.
