DVD 101

Oct 27 '00

The latest hype is the DVD for home theater and for good reason. The sound quality and picture quality are exceptional. You must have the right equipment though.
It isn't as easy as just going to buy a new DVD player and popping in a DVD. The following are a list of essential components for a DVD home theatre system.
1. Tv with S-Video input.
2. Home stereo receiver with Dolby digital capability. You can have a dolby digital encoder onboard the receiver or just 5.1 inputs. If you have the encoder in the receiver you do not need the decoder in the DVD.
3. DVD player with 5.1 Dolby Digital(DUH).
4. Speakers. Here is were it gets tricky. Most people complain that it doesn't sound like it did in the store. The right setup of speakers is the key to the 5.1 sound. You need 2 front speakers (at least medium quality), 2 rear speakers (medium quality), a front channel speaker(top quality, and a powered subwoofer. The two most important pieces are the powered sub and the front channel. This is were most of the sound comes from. If you do not use a powered sub you will not get that booming sound you heard in the store.
5. The last thing is the Fiber Optic cable to connect the DVD to the receiver and the S-video cable to connect the DVD to the TV. Do not try to get around these two as you will lose the digital output without them.

Good Luck and happy viewing.
